SIBU: Hawkers of Taman Selera Muhibbah Food Court have commenced operations at the temporary site along Jalan Tapang here on Friday, with the patrons required to comply strictly with the standard operating procedure (SOP).

Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) Market and Petty Traders Standing Committee chairman Councillor Albert Tiang could see the good response from the public on the first night of opening.

This temporary placement of hawkers would make way for the redevelopment of the popular food court, he pointed out.

“It is not perfect, but there is still room for improvement,” Tiang said yesterday when asked about the people’s response to the temporary site.

Meanwhile, SMC deputy chairman Bujang Zainuddin was present to declare open the new site, which the event also had Senator Robert Lau, SMC Building Control and Town Beautification Standing Committee chairman Councillor Joseph Chieng and Sibu Rural District Council (SRDC) deputy chairman Wong Ching Yong present.

There are over 40 hawkers operating under Taman Selera Muhibbah Food Court, but only 34 are trading at the temporary site – the others have opted to take leave.

According to Tiang, the estimated cost for the redevelopment the food court is RM3.5 million, funded by the Sarawak government.
