SIBU: Sibu Municipal Council chairman Clarence Ting believes the public library here can become an important community centre because of the multiple roles it plays.

He said public libraries are no longer places for students to read books or do homework only but had evolved into a digital centre where students could also gather all sorts of information .

“We are entering a digital world and I believe the library can become a busy centre when it is properly utilised,” he added.

Ting was speaking at the launching of the Digital Community Centre (DCC) at the library at Taman Grand Heights yesterday morning.

The event was also to mark the official launching of the International Digital Economy Conference Sarawak (Idecs) 2020 at Borneo Centre Convention Kuching (BCCK) by Chief Minister Datuk
Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg which was live streamed throughout the state yesterday morning.

With the simultaneous launching of the DCC statewide, Ting believed it would bring about a new concept on the importance of the public libraries as the centre of learning.

Touching on the DCC Grand Heights, Ting urged the committee members of Taman Grand Heights Neighborhood Community to embrace changes and work with SMC and the state government to effectively promote the library.

He said the facilities at the DCC Grand Heights were recently upgraded and improved after sponsors donated computers, notebooks and digital equipment to the library.

‘The presence of such digital equipments will truly change this library from a neighborhood library to a digital library with a worldwide connection as the people staying around the vicinity can utilise the facilities to the fullest.”

Ting said he felt happy that the people here could also enjoy all the latest digital services and updates introduced by the government.
