SIBU: The five-decade old Tiong Hua Road market will be demolished and a new one built at the same site.

Market and Petty Traders chairman and councillor Albert Tiang said a report by the Public Works

Department (JKR) had advised that the market be demolished as it was unsafe for use due to structural damage.

He said the cracks started to appear on Sept 17.

The market was subsequently closed on Sept 26 but the hawkers were allowed to trade outside under a canopy.

“JKR will come out with another detailed report in another two months’ time before we demolish it,” he said.

Tiang said it might take time for a new market to be constructed.

As for the 34 traders, he said they will be relocated to a temporary site in Jalan Chiew Siik Hiong.

Local Government and Housing Minister Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian visited the market along with Sibu Municipal Council chairman Clarence Ting.

Dr Sim said the safety of the hawkers and the public was priority.

“SMC will take the necessary action based on independent professional assessment,” he said.
