SIBU: Members of the public can only enter Sibu Central Market through five main entrances for the purpose of crowd-control.

According to Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) Market and Petty Traders Standing Committee chairman Councillor Albert Tiang, people entering any of these entrances would have their temperatures taken.

“During the initial test-run yesterday (Monday), those entering the central market must have their names registered and their temperature taken.

“We did the test-run again today (yesterday) and found out that there was a problem – the long queues of people wanting to go to the market.

“We then had a meeting where the council had decided that effective tomorrow (today), Sibu Central Market would only take temperature and do crowd-control – no name registration is required,” he said yesterday, adding that SMC’s decision was made following the overcrowding at the central market.

Nonetheless, Ong said the council had been conducting crowd-control at the market since the start of Movement Control Order (MCO) on March 18, where the hawkers and traders would operate on rotating basis.

“This measure (rotating basis) involved cutting down about 50 per cent of business operations and also the number of people entering the market,” he said.
