SIBU: Only one of the 52 food premises inspected here from Feb 3 until yesterday failed to comply with the ban on single-use plastic straws.

Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) Public Health, Environment and Municipal Services Standing Committee chairwoman Rhoda Ting said she was pleased with the results thus far.

She added that the plastic straws from errant operators of eateries had been confiscated.

“Overall number of food premises that complied up to Feb 7 from Jan 1,  is  297 premises.

We will continue to do monitoring,” Ting told The Borneo Post yesterday.

She urged members of the public to be the council’s eyes and ears and inform the councillors through WhatsApp if any coffee shop still provides straws.

“Take pictures and name of coffee shops and address… and post to councillors to be forwarded to enforcement for action to be taken,” she advised.

During the distribution of posters on the ban against single-use plastic straws at Sibu Central Market last year, Ting warned errant operators about the RM50 compound, and confiscation of their plastic straws, should they fail to adhere to the regulation.
