Ting speaks at the press conference in the company of councillors.

SIBU: Sibu Municipal Council chairman Clarence Ting said Taman Selera Muhibbah Food Court at Jalan Awang Ramli Amit will be the first food court here to be re-developed into an advanced and consumer-friendly hawker centre.

He said tender for the new project will be out by the end of February.

“Barring any unforeseen circumstances, construction work for the project should start in April and the project completed by December,” he said at the press conference after the SMC monthly meeting yesterday.

Ting said SMC will come up with a new design and transform the hawker centre to meet the need of people of all ages.

“There will be more facilities to cater to the people with disabilities, provision of baby care and breast feeding areas,” he added.

Ting said the present hawkers would be temporarily re-located to trade at Jalan Tapang at Sungei Antu in March.

Ting said SMC also plans to re-develop the Sg. Merah Market, specifically to accommodate the increased demand for business spaces.

“TT Tang Advocates has been appointed to work out the design.”

On another matter, Ting said SMC welcomed all residents to participate in the street garden campaign, adding the guidelines will be ready for reference by March.

Street gardens are mainly located on green areas on public space such as nature strips or median strips.

Ting said street gardens are planted and maintained by community members.

“Urban gardening activities are a valuable form of recreation that contribute to the health and wellbeing of the community and provide a range of environmental, social, economic and educational benefits.”

Ting added that SMC will popularise Sibu Night Market as a popular tourist spot for all the multi races of people and tourists. As such, he said SMC will organise the Sibu Night Market Arch contest, effective on Feb 1 to March 31.

Forms can be obtained from SMC library or alternatively, can be downloaded from SMC official website.
