Datuk Tiong Thai King

SIBU: Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) chairman Datuk Tiong Thai King believes it is time for him to make way for others to helm the council.

He said: “I have served as SMC chairman for a long time – 15 years. I believe I will not be reappointed.”

Tiong, who is Dudong assemblyman, disclosed this when asked if the Borneo Cultural Festival (BCF) to be held here from July 18 till 27 will be affected, given that the new batch of councillors has yet to be announced.

He said there should not be any problem since a good system is in place.

“It was first held some 16 years ago. Everyone involved is familiar with the event. All responsibilities have been assigned, and people know what they are supposed to do.”

Tiong, who has been the council’s chairman since April 1, 2004, started his first day of work on April 15, 2004. He took over the chairmanship from the late Datuk Robert Lau Hoi Chew.

“Although today (Friday) is my last day in office, I continue to work as usual,” he said.

He felt reluctant to leave staff who worked with him for 15 years and two months.

Meanwhile, the term of the current batch of more than 700 councillors in all 24 local councils which ends tomorrow (June 30) will not be extended.

Assistant Minister of Local Government Datu Dr Penguang Manggil said a new list of councillors, including chairmen and deputy chairmen will be finalised during a Cabinet meeting on July 11.
