SIBU: Works to upgrade the Sibu Central Market which began March 1 is expected to be completed by October.

Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) deputy chairperson Rogayah Jamain said the upgrade covers the pork stall area, ground floor and the first floor.
 
She said the contractor is putting up temporary stalls at the open mall area to relocate the hawkers to facilitate the upgrading works.

She expects the hawkers to move to these temporary stalls by March 20.

“By then, the contractor should begin the renovation work, starting with the pork stall area and certain portions on the ground floor and the first floor,” she said.

The renovation works will also cover the ground floor area of Sibu Central Market.

“The 16 pork stall holders and all vendors on the ground floor will move to the temporary stalls in four phases,” she added.

According to her, the upgrading work is to improve ventilation as well as to facilitate the supply of piped water there.
 
“Also, it will make the maintaining of cleanliness easier,” she added.

Sibu Central Market currently houses about 1,000 hawkers.
