SIBU: The Sibu Muncipal Council (SMC) will hold the ‘Love Earth Day Campaign’ at the ground floor of Wisma Sanyan on April 20-21 from 8am.

Organising chairman councillor Lai Chiong Ann said the campaign, which would adopt the global theme ‘Protect Our Species’, is co-organised with the Lions Club of Sibu Dudong and Junior Chamber International (JCI).

He told a press conference on Friday that this year’s campaign will focus on five Rs – refuse, reduce, reuse, repair, and recycle.

The two-day programme includes slide and video show on making recycled items, video competition relating to the theme such as illegal dumping in Sibu, ban of polystyrene, Say No to Plastic Bags and Say No to Plastic Straws Campaign, educational talk, and exhibition.

There will also be an inter-school poster design contest at SMK Methodist and DIY handicrafts contest at SJK Chung Hua on April 21.

Lions Club of Sibu Dudong charter president Kapitan Connie Loh said the club would organise an event at the Sibu Gateway on March 30 at 7pm.

She said school students will design and create displays using recyclable items.

“These recycled items for display can be in any form based on their creativity. It’s to show the public what recycling is, what can be recycled, how recycling can be done.

“Our purpose is to highlight importance of environmental protection and encourage people to reuse unwanted items that need to be thrown away but that can recycled for other purposes or modified into new items at that. Due to time constraints, this will not be a competition, because we don’t want to stress out the students. But each participating school will receive a token of appreciation,” she said.
