SIBU: Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) needs to promote tourism in the central region as a whole, not just the town.

Tourism, Art, Culture, Youth and Sport Ministry permanent secretary Hii Chang Kee made this call at the council’s Appreciation Night.

He pointed out that only promoting the town would not be enough to attract tourists.

“If you promote Sibu only, tourists will only stay for one to two nights,” said Hii who was once the council’s secretary.

“If the whole region is promoted, tourists would then also want to visit Sarikei, Bintangor, Kanowit, Song and Kapit.

Hii also called on the council to establish a database of visitors who attend its most popular event – the Borneo Cultural Festival.

“This would help convince stakeholders like travel agents to promote the event,” he said.

Though tourism was not one of the core businesses of the council, Hii said SMC should not underestimate its role.

“You should not ignore tourism,” he said in his speech at the event held to appreciate the contribution of various parties to SMC.

Media members, councillors and heads of government departments were among those presented with certificates of appreciation.

Also present were SMC chairman Datuk Tiong Thai King said Visit Sibu 2017 and deputy chairman Rogayah Jamain.
