SIBU: Sibu Municipal Council’s imposition of RM500 compound for littering since July 1 has shown positive effect – the town is a lot cleaner now.

With 46 litterbugs caught as of July 26, people have to think twice before throwing rubbish indiscriminately.

Street sweeper Abu Bakar Abdullah said the streets in the central business district were cleared from rubbish mainly parking coupons, cigarrette butt and plastic bags.

“Before the implementation of the penalty, we had a hard time clearing rubbish off the streets. “Sometimes, only one hour after clean-up, the streets become dirty again,” he told StarMetro.

Abu’s biggest task now is to sweep leaves off the street.

He expressed disappointment with smokers, who threw cigarrette butts at five-foot way of coffeeshops.

“We have to pick up the cigarrette butts in order to keep the town clean,” he added.

Another sweeper, Tubo Engkamang, concurred with Abu on the effect of the penalty on the town’s cleanliness.

“There is not much rubbish on the streets like before,” she said.

Now sweepers like Abu and Tubo can spent more time sweeping fallen leaves from the streets.
