SIBU: Motorists should be courteous and stop at pedestrian crossings.

Sibu Municipal Council Work and Traffic committee chairman and councillor Eric Wong said this when told about complaints that vehicles were not stopping at the pedestrian crossing in front of the central market.

Most motorists including motorcyclists fail to stop, making it difficult for pedestrians to cross safely.

"It is not easy to change people’s behaviour,” he said in advising motorists to be courteous on the road.

Wong said that unfortunately, such behaviour was typical among Asians.

“In the west, they behave differently and pay heed to the zebra crossing,” he said.

He added that installing traffic lights was not a solution.

Separately, Wong said the council would resurface the road after making the section of Jalan Kampung Nyabor in front of HSBC and also Jalan Tunku Osman into one-way.

The resurfacing was necessary after the dividers were removed.

“We wanted to divert traffic from Jalan Lanang into these two areas.

“Previously, those who wanted to go to Jalan Kampung Datu, had to pass through the town centre first,” said Wong.
