SIBU – Sarawak Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg has announced a RM3 million allocation to upgrade the Sibu Central Market.

The surprise announcement was made while having breakfast with his entourage at the hawker stalls on the first floor of the market when he arrived for a visit there this morning.

The upgrading works will not only be a boon to the operators at the market but also patrons and visitors.

“This market is very important for agro-tourism. A lot of people come to this market. There are 1,572 operators here, which includes those at the open ‘tamu’ market.

“The facilities need to be upgraded so that the market will look nice for the tourists to see,” Abang Johari told reporters here.

Also present were wife, Datin Patinggi Juma'ani Tuanku Bujang, Sarawak International Trade and E-commerce Minister Datuk Seri Wong Soon Koh and wife, Datin Seri Leong Poh Lin, BN Sibu parliamentary candidate Datuk Andrew Wong Kee Yew and Lanang candidate Kelvin Kong Sien Chiu.

Abang Johari, who arrived at the market about 10.44am, spent about 40 minutes meeting the operators and bought some vegetables before having breakfast with his entourage at the hawker stalls located on the first floor.

He appeared amazed over the display of agricultural products and day-to-day necessities meant for sale at the market.

Met later, Sibu Municipal Council deputy chairman Rogayah Jamain said the allocation would be used to upgrade booths at the ‘tamu’ market, food and beverage stalls, repainting of the market building, replacement of treated water piping, replacement of rain gutter and installation of closed-circuit television cameras.
