SIBU: Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) has banned operators of food outlets from having pets or animals in their premises as part of measures to prevent the outbreak of the Hepatitis A disease.

The council was imposing the ruling following two recent reported cases of the disease in the Samarahan division.

SMC chairman Datuk Tiong Thai King in his address before the council meeting here said food outlet operators and their customers were also strictly prohibited from feeding stray animals, especially dogs and cats near their premises.

Tiong warned that the council may suspend or revoke the operators’ licence under Section 145 of the Local Authority Ordinance 1996 if they were found guilty of a breach of the ruling.

“All food operators and hawkers must use clean aprons, gloves and hairnets during food preparation,” he said.

He added that the council would also work closely with Sibu Divi-sional Health Office on the matter.

He also said public awareness on reducing the use of plastic bags was still low.

This was even after the council had launched the “Say No to Plastic Bag 2.0” campaign on Jan 1 this year.

However, the majority of super stores were actively participating in the campaign.

“In order to make the campaign more sustainable, the council is working closely with non-governmental organisations and media partners to widely promote the objective of the campaign through education programmes and promotional activities,” he said.
