SIBU: The final rounds of the seventh edition of the Borneo Talent Awards (BTA) 2017 will take place this weekend at the Sibu Civic Centre.

Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) councillor and organising chairman Wong Hie Ping said from a total of 199 entries, 54 entries were selected for the semi-final today.

“The semi-finalists are from Kota Kinabalu, Kuching, Sibu, Miri and Bintulu.

“Many of them have never come to Sibu before and through their participation in the BTA, they will be here for the first time with their friends and family,” she said.

She said participants from Brunei, Kuala Lumpur and Penang also auditioned for the competition but they did not make it through to the semi-final.

“As there are 54 semi-finalists, we will start the contest earlier at 5pm on Saturday.

“From there, we will select 20 entries for the grand finale,” she said.

All the finalists, she said, stood to win prizes which include the main title – Talent of the Year, which comes with RM5,000 prize money.

Winners of the Most Creative Award, Most Entertaining Talent Award, and Most Popular Talent Award will receive RM1,000 plus a trophy.

Besides that, there are also seven Special Talent Awards where the winners would get RM500 plus a trophy.

The five judges this time are from Sibu, China, Kuching, Miri and Kota Kinabalu.

For the Talent of the Year Award, she said contestants from Sibu won the first and second edition of the competition, while Kuching won the third and fourth editions and Kota Kinabalu the fifth and sixth editions.

“Members of the audience who vote for the Most Popular Talent Award are in the running for prizes worth over RM10,000, including mobile phone, air-ticket and shopping vouchers,” she said.

Wong invited the public to watch the contest as the entrance to the venue is free.
