SIBU: Kampung Bahagia Jaya residents want Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) to enforce the RM500 fine for littering in their area to prevent indiscriminate dumping of waste there.

According to a spokesman from its village development committee, because of the lack of enforcement there, irresponsible people have been dumping their domestic waste, making the area an eyesore as well as unhygienic.

The spokesman made this call during a mass-cleaning campaign at the village over the weekend, which saw 30 Miri National Youth Skill Training Institute trainees taking part in the activity.

The campaign was led by Sibu Resident Hii Chang Kee.

“We want the council to issue the RM500 fine to those caught littering.

“We are also requesting the council to make frequent visits to our area to deter would-be litterbugs from throwing their rubbish indiscriminately,” he said.

He also had a message for the litterbugs: “Please stop your littering habit as we want to have a high standard of cleanliness in our area.”

The cleaning campaign was held to instil the spirit of volunteerism among the trainees.

They helped in clearing out rubbish from Lane 1 of the area.

That part of the road has been a favourite dumping ground for litterbugs to dispose of their refuse.
