SIBU: Thirty-nine bush fire cases were reported here between January and July this year, according to Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) zone chief Abdul Mutalib Rashid.

He revealed that of the 39 incidents, 19 were reported to the Sibu Fire Station while 20 to the Sungai Merah Fire Station.

“From Aug 1 until today (yesterday), our fire station in Sungai Merah recorded five cases of bush fires, while Sibu Fire Station had one,” he told The Borneo Post when contacted yesterday.

Abdul Mutalib added that for the first seven months of this year, there were also two cases of forest fires and one case of garden/plantation fire reported here.

“Our advice to members of the public is to refrain from open burning in view of the current hot and dry weather. However, if there is a need to so, the activity must be monitored and the fire put out before leaving the location,” he said.

Meanwhile, Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) deputy chairwoman Rogayah Jamain called on the public to work towards ensuring a clean and sustainable environment, saying the council has stepped up efforts to curb backyard burning activities at residential areas.

“Report to us if you sight open burning (activities) in your neighbourhood,” she said.
