SIBU: Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) has called on dog owners to keep their pets within their house compounds.

SMC chairman Datuk Tiong Thai King said leaving their dogs to roam freely in the open would not only create environmental problems but may cause fear.

“I appeal to and remind all dog owners to keep your dogs within your premises’ compounds. Love your pets, love your community,” he said during a rabies awareness talk yesterday.

“Prevention is better than cure. While Sibu Division is free from rabies, as of now, it is important for us to create awareness of and educate the people on rabies, which has never occurred in our community.”

He said SMC has beefed up efforts to reduce the number of stray dogs here with 180 rounded up last month.

“We will continue to carry out our surveillance on stray dogs,” he said.

He thanked the state government for effectively managing the rabies outbreak.

“We have full confidence in the State Disaster Management Committee headed by (Deputy Chief Minister) Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas for containing the outbreak,” he added.
