SIBU: Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) will bank on the Borneo International RC Powerboat Tournament 2017 from April 28-30 at Permai Lake Garden here for a mention in the Malaysian Book of Records.

“The current record was held by Malacca who registered 522 boats in a competition in 2015,” event co-organiser Wong Hie Ping told a press conference yesterday, revealing that 650 boats are already registered.

“We hope to register more, but we need to set a limit,” she added.

Borneo International RC Powerboat Tournament 2017, organised in conjunction with Visit Sibu Year 2017, will see racers from all over the world including the United States, Indonesia, Thailand, Dubai, Vietnam and Brunei.

Touted as ‘the biggest event of its kind in Southeast Asia,’ it offers prize money totaling RM88,150.

The champion in each of the six categories (A to I) will pocket RM5,000 while second to fifth placings will receive RM3,000, RM1,500, RM800, and RM400.

Those from sixth to tenth will get RM150. A special team (T) category — with a minimum of five members per team — will offer the grand prize of RM8,000.

“The participants will have the freedom to choose their own team members;through this, we encourage them to mix around with one another, mix with locals and participants from different countries,” Wong explained.

Also present at the press conference were SMC chairman Datuk Tiong Thai King, race director Abang Nawawi Bolhassan, chairman of Sibu Remote Control Sports Club Andrew Ling and competition co-organiser Peter Ling.
