SIBU: The compound fee for littering in Sibu will increase from RM20 to RM500 from July.

Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) decided to increase the amount to discourage rampant littering in the town.

Council chairman Datuk Tiong Thai King said the new fee was to make the public aware that littering will be “an expensive habit” now.

“Although the council had initiated plenty of environmental programmes to raise awareness through anti-littering campaigns, public littering has increased significantly,” he said at the recent council meeting.

“There are four reasons why people litter: no sense of ownership, a belief that others will pick up after them, litter is tolerated and littering is convenient,” he added.

He also wanted schools to organise more activities such as anti-littering poster design competition and litter warden programme to encourage students to dispose of their rubbish responsibly.

He added that the no plastic bag policy should also be implemented daily at supermarkets and retail stores as a way to help the environment.

“The public is urged to use paper bags, biodegradable carriers or bring their own shopping bags,” he said.

On a separate matter, he said as of April 25, the council had collected RM9.3mil or 23.63% of the assessment rates for 2017.

It had also collected 15.68% of arrears amounting to RM1.03mil.
