Work is still in progress for the completion of the Sibu’s Heroes’ Monument. – Photo by Peter Boon SIBU (March 1): The 30-metre tall Heroes’ Monument at Dataran Tun Tuanku Bujang Phase 2 here is near completion and should be finished once the tiling work is completed, says Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) deputy chairman Mohammed Abdullah Izkandar Roseley. According to Izkandar, the contractor had requested for an extension of time (EOT) due to the project being delayed by the current wet weather. “The application is currently pending approval from SMC as the contractor has not submitted the data needed for the extension,” he told The Borneo Post yesterday. Deputy Minister of Education, Innovation and Talent Development, Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee Annuar, who is also the Nangka assemblyman, had proposed for the construction of the monument in memory of the Sibu nationalists – Rosli Dhoby, Morshidi Sidek, Awang Ramli Amit Mohd Deli, and Bujang Suntong, who had fought for Sarawak’s independence from the British rule. The project, under the Nangka constituency’s Rural Transformation Programme (RTP), costs about RM778,000 and is designed by UTS (University of Technology Sarawak) with SMC as its implementing agency. The handing over of the site to the contractor took place June 23 last year.

Ting (centre) chairing the full council meeting. With him are his deputy Mohammed Abdullah Izkandar Roseley (left) and SMC legal officer Jestina Teresa Kaben. SIBU (Feb 29): Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) will act tough on grass cutting contractors who failed to execute their work properly, warns its chairman Clarence Ting. This included holding their payment as penalty, he said. He said he was very disappointed when checking Jalan Gambir here in the rain recently. “I checked the road myself and all the grass is covered in water ponding. The situation at Jalan Gambir is just so bad with every turning being flooded. “I am so disappointed. After four years being the council chairman, this thing is not getting better but getting worse,” he said during the full council meeting here yesterday. Ting also said that at some places, the grass was taller than the road. “So after they cut the grass, the water cannot flow over the grass. “Second thing, I have been saying it for four years already that some contractors do not even have a hoe in their lorry. So how are they going to dig a drain for the water to flow? “I hope the Public Health, Environment and Municipal Services working committee in their meeting next month will come up with a formula to penalise the contractors. “This is not acceptable and cannot continue. We are accepting work that they were supposed to do but they did not do,” he stressed.

Ting (right) witnessing how the Aedes traps operate. Health Ministry has set up 110 units of Aedes mosquito auto dissemination trap devices at Sibu Central Market, Sarawak, as a measure to prevent dengue cases. “Our central market is the first in the state to be approached by the ministry for the placement of the device which cost RM36 each,” said Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) chairman Clarence Ting. The device is designed to bait Aedes mosquitoes searching for a place to lay eggs. After coming into contact with the insecticide inside these traps, the contaminated adult mosquitoes will carry the insecticide and spread it to other breeding sites, killing larvae there. According to Ting, the device had been proven to reduce dengue cases in peninsular Malaysia. “There are six reported dengue cases in Sibu so far this year. “We will try to reduce dengue cases. “If this (device) is successful, we will bring it to SMC’s other markets in April,” said Ting. Similarly, he said he would encourage residents to instal the device in their homes if it is proven effective.

Roofing works in progress at Bukit Lima swimming pool. – Photo by Peter Boon SIBU (Jan 12): The keenly-awaited proposed retrofitting and covered outdoor learning area (COLA) of Bukit Lima swimming pool here, costing about RM2.92 million, is expected to be completed by mid-May. According to Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) deputy chairman Mohammed Abdullah Izkandar Roseley, the six-month project is funded and implemented by Sarawak Sports Corporation (SSC). The project commenced on Nov 15 and is expected to be completed by May 15. “The venue had been used to hold swimming competitions. “Training sessions for athletes would no longer be disrupted in the event of poor weather after the project was completed,” he told The Borneo Post yesterday when asked about the roofing project for this swimming pool. Izkandar recalled that the request for a roof had been brought up by local swimmers over the years. “Currently, the pool is off-limits to the public until completion. “The pool will continue to be maintained by the council throughout the construction,” he said. He added that the Delta swimming pool, one of the two pools here, was used more for recreational pool and swim training than swimming competitions. “Competitive swimming has not yet taken place at Delta swimming pool since it is mostly used for public swimming and swim training,” Izkandar said. Meanwhile, Sibu Amateur Swimming Association (Sasa) president Tony Hii welcomed the latest development at Bukit Lima swimming pool. “Once completed, it will definitely benefit Sasa swimmers, as we can have more sessions for training and more flexibility in our training schedule,” Hii said. “Once it is completed, Sasa swimmers will definitely benefit from having additional training sessions and scheduling flexibility,” Hii said.
