SIBU: A “go bald” campaign organised by Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) has raised a total of RM16,500 for Sarawak Children’s Cancer Society (SCCS).

Twenty-seven staff and family members of the council shaved their heads bald, raising RM15,000 for their efforts, while another RM1,500 came from timber company Mafrica Corporation.

Two staff members of the company helped to raise the money yesterday.

Two employees of Sanyan Group of Companies and one Public Works Department staff member also took part in the campaign.

The society’s event and marketing assistant manager Genevieve Tan said this year, it intended to raise RM1mil to continue providing support to childhood cancer patients and their families, through counselling services as well as assistance in terms of accommodation, food and transportation for out-of-town patients and financial aid.

This year is the 10th year of the campaign.

“Childhood cancer is now the leading cause of death among children and adolescents in developed and developing countries,” Tan said.

“In some countries, deaths because of childhood cancer are more than the combined deaths from all types of childhood diseases,” she added.

She disclosed that in the state, a child was diagnosed with cancer every five days, adding that nowadays, there is an increase in the survival rate of children, especially in developed, high income countries.

“With awareness and support, SCCS aims to increase access to care for children with cancer,” she said.

Tan said similar events would also take place in Kuching at Permaisuri Imperial City Mall on May 13, Delta Mall, Sibu, on May 20, and Times Square Megamall, Bintulu, on May 27.

SMC chairman Datuk Tiong Thai King said by participating in the campaign, SMC was fulfilling its corporate social responsibility and showing that it cared for the community.
