SIBU: The ‘unwarranted’ large wooden structure in the compound of the Sibu Heritage Cultural Centre in Jalan Wong Nai Siong has been demolished by the Sibu Municipal Council (SMC).

SMC deputy chairman Rogayah Jamain said the structure, which was built about eight years ago, was demolished as it “does not serve its purpose anymore.”

“The wooden planks do not look good anymore. I also saw that it was constantly dirty and smelly with bird droppings all over it,” she said.

The council, she added, was beautifying the place by putting plants there.

“We will also build benches for people to relax there, just like what we used to have in the 1980s,” she said.

According to her, the beautification of the area was part of the council’s improvement projects for the town.

Meanwhile, the demolition of the wooden structure was a huge relief to proprietors of a row of 10 stalls selling bags as they were previously against it.

As the structure was directly in front of them, they had complained that the heat from the wooden planks, especially on hot days, was unbearable for them.

It also caused their business to drop.

A proprietor who only wished to be known as Chieng welcomed the move.

“The structure was an eyesore. With its demolition, the place will be cooler,” she said.

She has been trading there for the past 20 years.
